If you decide on having some yogurt, you probably feel like you’re making a good healthy choice, right? Well, yes, it’s probably better than McDonalds, BUT, some yogurts contain so much sugar and preservatives that it does more harm than good. So, what should you look out for when buying yogurt.
- Yogurt should have only two ingredients: milk and cultures. If anything else is added: not good! We all know that probiotics (good bacteria) are yogurt’s key ingredients. These beneficial bugs have been shown to help with digestion and gut health. But not all yogurt sold in stores actually contains these cultures. Some companies heat-treat yogurt after culturing, which kills off bacteria, both good and bad, to make it more shelf-stable and reduce tartness.
- Do a sugar test: yogurt already has a fair amount of naturally occurring milk sugar, aka lactose. If your yogurt contains added sugars, it will really spike your blood sugar and have you feeling tired afterwards and can even cause you craving some carbs or sugar in order to try to lift your blood sugar again: not a good idea! Rather add a bit of raw honey/fresh fruits to your plain double thick yogurt for a blood sugar friendly snack/meal.
See Health Nook’s online store for a high-quality yogurt that is made from full-fat milk with only a pinch of cultures. It gets strained by hand in order to offer an all-natural plain double cream yoghurt. This is what real yoghurt should taste like without a hint of additives or preservatives.
